Domain Registration, Hosting & Name Services - DNS

Domain Registration

Domain names, for general purposes, are customized URLs (Web site addresses)
that help identify your site.

Registering a domain is imperative for public businesses on the Net. Domains help create or extend your company brand, making you more visible and therefore, easier to find.

"Domain names have become a vital component of corporate identity, as important as trademark or brand name."

Domain Names  - DNS servers & hosting your Web site

We are going to talk about an internet service that seems to confuse a lot of people

DNS was created in 1984 by Paul Mockapetris. It was created out of a need to have some way of using real names like www.yourcompanyname.com instead of "24.26.45.76" to find our favorite websites. Who can remember that bunch of numbers? DNS is simply a translator. It translates the numbers to the name and the name to the numbers. Computers on the internet need to use the numbers to talk to one another, and people use the names to navigate their way around. DNS makes all this possible. There are thousands of DNS computers on the internet all sharing information about the name and numbers they know about. This is how someone in Singapore can find your website in Nome, Alaska!

How does this affect you?

Well, it can affect you if you are planning to own your own domain and create a website using that name, or possibly using the domain to send and receive email. When you register your domain you need to specify who your DNS servers are going to be.

The DNS servers are usually provided to you by the company that is hosting your website. For example, if you host with " Hostingcompany ", the name servers are between "ns1.hostingcompany.com" and "ns12.hostingcompany.com". It is these name servers that tell the world how to find your website or email box.

Here is how it works:

domain hosting and registration

Your computer wants to go to www.yourcompanyname.com. The first thing that happens is it asks your ISP's DNS server (1) "do you know the number for this website?" If it does, it will tell your computer what it is and you connect directly to the Website Server (3).

If the ISP's DNS server doesn't know, it will ask (in a round about way) the website owner’s DNS server for the number (2). Then it connects to the website server (3). Once it knows the number it keeps it in cache so it doesn't have to ask again, therefore making the connection quicker to the website on subsequent requests. That is why sometimes when you visit a website for the first time it seems to be slow, but then speeds right up on subsequent visits. There is more to DNS, but this should help make it a little clearer.
